Channel Capacity, PoE System Overview & Hardware Architecture
What type of NVR is the Reolink RLN16 and how many camera channels does it support?
A: The Reolink RLN16 is a high-capacity Network Video Recorder equipped with 16 built-in Power over Ethernet (PoE) ports. It supports up to 24 IP cameras in total (With a maximum of 16 directly connected wired PoE cameras and additional cameras connected via your local network switch or router) for 24/7 continuous recording, multi-channel live monitoring, and centralized device management.
How does the built-in 16-channel PoE system work?
A: The rear panel features 16 independent RJ45 PoE ports conforming to IEEE 802.3af/at standards. Each port delivers up to 25W of power over standard Cat5e/Cat6/Cat7 Ethernet cables, transmitting both high-definition digital video and electric power simultaneously over a single cable up to 100 meters (330 feet) without requiring separate power adapters for each camera.
Can the RLN16 support Reolink WiFi cameras and battery-powered cameras?
A: Yes. In addition to direct wired PoE cameras, the RLN16 can record and manage Reolink WiFi cameras (Such as E1 series, TrackMix WiFi, RLC-843WA, and Video Doorbells) over your local WiFi router network. Certain newer Reolink battery-powered cameras with updated firmware can also link to the NVR for motion-triggered video recording and centralized live viewing.
Does the RLN16 feature physical front-panel navigation controls?
A: Yes. In addition to USB mouse operation, the front panel of the RLN16 chassis features a dedicated directional control panel (Up, down, left, right, and select buttons) alongside a front USB 2.0 port, Power LED, and HDD activity LED, allowing basic menu navigation directly from the chassis.
Can the RLN16 operate completely offline without an Internet connection?
A: Yes. The RLN16 can operate as an entirely offline, self-contained closed-circuit security system. You can connect PoE cameras directly to the 16 rear ports, record 24/7 footage to the installed internal SATA hard drives, and view live video feeds or playback on a connected HDMI or VGA monitor. Internet connectivity is only required if you wish to receive mobile push notifications, email alerts, or access camera streams remotely through the Reolink App and Client.
Video Decoding, Display Output & Audio
What video resolutions and stream decoding limits are supported?
A: The RLN16 supports ultra-high-definition decoding up to 16 Megapixels Ultra HD (7680x2160), 12MP (4096x3072 / 4512x2512), 4K 8MP (3840x2160), 5MP (2560x1920), 4MP (2560x1440), 3MP (2304x1296), 1080p Full HD, and 720p HD across both mainstream and substream profiles.
Which video compression codecs are supported by the NVR?
A: The system supports both advanced H.265 (HEVC) and standard H.264 video compression formats. This optimizes hard drive storage efficiency and conserves network bandwidth while preserving sharp detail and color accuracy in 4K and 16MP footage.
What monitor display outputs and output resolutions are available?
A: The rear panel provides two local display outputs:
HDMI Output: Supports display resolutions of 3840x2160 (4K UHD), 1920x1080 (1080p Full HD), 1280x1024, 1280x720, and 1024x768.
VGA Output: Supports display resolutions of 1920x1080 (1080p Full HD), 1280x1024, 1280x720, and 1024x768.
How many channels can be played back synchronously at the same time?
A: The RLN16 supports synchronous multi-channel playback of up to 4 camera channels simultaneously on a locally connected HDMI/VGA monitor or via the Reolink Client desktop software, allowing you to review synchronized incident footage from multiple angles.
Does the RLN16 support audio recording and local audio output?
A: Yes. The NVR records incoming audio streams from connected cameras equipped with integrated microphones. For local audio monitoring on an external amplified speaker or TV, the rear panel includes 1 RCA audio output port. Two-way interactive talk can also be conducted using the Reolink App or Client software.
Hard Drive Installation, Storage Capacity & Recording Modes
Does this standalone RLN16 come with a hard drive, and what is the maximum storage capacity?
A: In this standalone edition, internal hard drives are sold separately (No HDD is pre-installed). The RLN16 features 2 internal SATA interfaces, supporting two 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch internal SATA hard drives with a maximum capacity of 8TB per drive, providing a maximum total storage capacity of up to 16TB. Dedicated surveillance-grade drives (Such as Western Digital Purple or Seagate SkyHawk) are recommended for continuous write performance.
How do you install internal SATA hard drives into the RLN16 chassis?
A:
Ensure the NVR power switch is set to "Off" and unplug the power adapter.
Unscrew the screws securing the metal top cover and slide the cover off.
Connect the SATA data cables and power cables from the NVR motherboard to your SATA hard drive(s).
Position the hard drive(s) on the bottom chassis tray and tighten the mounting screws from underneath.
Reassemble the outer casing, reconnect power, turn on the power switch, navigate to Settings > Storage on the monitor, and format the newly installed drive(s).
Does the RLN16 support external eSATA hard drives?
A: No. Current hardware revisions (Such as N6MB01) do not include an external eSATA port. All storage expansion must be accommodated internally using the two onboard SATA interfaces (Up to 2x 8TB = 16TB total).
What recording modes and schedules can be configured?
A: Each channel can be configured independently with three flexible recording modes:
24/7 Continuous Recording: Uninterrupted around-the-clock recording across selected channels.
Motion / Smart AI Event Recording: Records video only when person, vehicle, animal, or general motion triggers occur.
Scheduled / Timer Recording: Records only during specific hours or days designated by the user.
What happens when the hard drive reaches full capacity?
A: By default, the RLN16 has automatic HDD Overwrite enabled. When storage reaches full capacity, the NVR automatically writes over the oldest recorded footage to make room for new video streams without manual file deletion or surveillance interruption.
