Channel Capacity, PoE Architecture & System Overview
What type of NVR is the Reolink RLN36 and how many cameras does it support?
A: The Reolink RLN36 is a high-capacity, commercial-grade Network Video Recorder designed for large-scale video surveillance. It supports centralized 24/7 continuous recording, live monitoring, smart playback, and device management for up to 36 IP camera channels simultaneously.
Does the RLN36 have built-in PoE (Power over Ethernet) ports to power cameras directly?
A: No. Unlike the RLN8 or RLN16 series, the RLN36 does not have built-in PoE ports on its rear panel. To connect and power wired PoE cameras, you must connect the cameras through external PoE switches or PoE injectors, which then link to the RLN36 via its dedicated camera network ports or your local area network (LAN).
What is the configuration and purpose of the 5 rear Ethernet ports on the RLN36?
A: The rear panel features 5 independent Gigabit RJ-45 Ethernet ports (10/100/1000 Mbps self-adaptive):
4x IP Camera LAN Ports: Dedicated network ports designed to connect directly to external PoE switches, segregating camera video traffic from your main network.
1x LAN/WAN Uplink Port: Connects directly to your main Internet router or core network switch for local network management and remote Internet access via the Reolink App and Client.
Can the RLN36 connect to both wired PoE and wireless Reolink IP cameras?
A: Yes. The RLN36 can manage and record up to 36 Reolink cameras of any connection type across your network, including wired PoE cameras (Via PoE switches), dual-band WiFi cameras, and Reolink PoE/WiFi Video Doorbells. Compatible Reolink battery-powered cameras with updated firmware can also link to the system for motion-triggered event recording.
Can the RLN36 operate entirely offline without an Internet connection?
A: Yes. The RLN36 can function as a completely offline, closed-circuit local security system. You can connect your cameras via PoE switches to the NVR, record 24/7 footage directly to installed internal SATA hard drives, and view live video feeds or playback on a locally connected HDMI or VGA monitor. An Internet connection is only required if you want mobile push notifications, email alerts, or remote access through the Reolink App or Client.

Reassemble the outer cover, tighten the screws, reconnect the power supply, and power on the unit.
On your connected monitor, navigate to Settings > Storage, select the newly detected drive(s), and click Format to initialize them for recording.
Does the RLN36 support external eSATA hard drives?
A: No. The RLN36 does not include an external eSATA port. All storage expansion must be accommodated internally using the 3 onboard SATA interfaces (Up to 3x 16TB = 48TB total storage capacity).
What recording modes and schedules can be configured on each channel?
A: Each of the 36 channels can be configured independently with three flexible recording modes:
24/7 Continuous Recording: Uninterrupted round-the-clock recording across designated channels.
Motion / Smart AI Event Recording: Records video only when person, vehicle, animal, or general motion triggers occur.
Scheduled / Custom Timer Recording: Records only during specific hours or days designated by the user.
What happens when the installed hard drives reach full capacity?
